Andrew Crofts praised the “unbelievable” show of support from Charlton fans at Bury on Saturday.

Despite witnessing a turbulent year on and off the field, over 1000 Addicks fans travelled to Greater Manchester for the season opener.

Crofts, who joined Charlton in July following a loan spell at Gillingham, felt the supporters were right behind the team at Gigg Lane.

The 32-year-old said: “To bring 1000 fans up to Bury is unbelievable, before the game I said ‘that’s a real good effort from them’.

“It was great to see them out in their numbers. They were right with us and could see we were getting on top.

“We had a good few chances and it looked like we would nick a goal but then we’ve conceded two sloppy goals.”

Crofts added: “Then it’s hard for them because off the back of last season they’re already disappointed and then they see the team concede two goals.

“But we’re going to stay together – we want to do something this year and we want them right behind us and hopefully they will be.

“We’re going to give it everything we’ve got.”

After a goalless first-half, Bury broke the deadlock through a Neil Danns penalty on 71 minutes.

Substitute Kelvin Etuhu then beat Declan Rudd from close-range in the latter stages of the match – both goals came from corners.

Charlton conceded over 20 times from corners last season and Crofts says this is an area the team have worked on under Russell Slade.

“We’ve been working on it and it was going really well in pre-season, which is why it’s a little bit of a kick in the teeth,” he added.

“The gaffer has pointed it out and the boys will learn from it. We will be working as hard as we can on the training ground to sort it out.”
