Russell Slade believes Charlton are in “pole position” to sign several players next week.

The former Cardiff City boss revealed last week that he hoped to bring in five or six players before the start of the League One season.

The club has as of yet failed to build on their early summer signings but Slade insists it is not the time to worry.

He said: “It’s not a time to worry at all.

“We’ve had seven games and most clubs have had six, so in terms of the personnel we could afford to go a bit different today because we’ve got the numbers under our belts as individuals and as a group.

“In terms of more personnel coming in, that’s the one thing we are behind with and that’s the one thing that needs addressing before long.

“Our first game is on Saturday and the window closes at the end of August. We would hope by then we’ve made five signings or something in that region.”

Slade was speaking after the Addicks were held to a 1-1 draw by RKC Waalwijk at the Valley – the Dutch side won the subsequent penalty shootout 4-3.

And when asked whether Charlton were close to bolstering their squad, Slade said: “The analogy for me is that we’re spinning plates.

“We’re negotiating – one or two we would hope drop at the early part of the week as clubs make their final decisions.

“We’re in pole position in a couple of them – hopefully we nudge them over the line in the next 48 hours or so.”

The departures of Stephen Henderson and Nick Pope have left the club without a senior goalkeeper in their ranks.

Slade admitted this was a priority area for him before the season starts next week.

“Of course it is, it’s a major priority,” the 55-year-old added.

“Goalkeepers are massively important and I’d like to think we can conclude that soon.”
