Russell Slade admits there has been interest in Scottish striker Tony Watt from other clubs this summer.

But the Charlton boss insists Watt’s first priority should be to regain his fitness following a long lay-off.

Watt, 22, suffered a groin injury during the 2015/16 season that forced him to return to SE7 from his loan spell at Blackburn Rovers.

The forward missed Charlton’s first pre-season fixture against Welling United last weekend but played 45 minutes against Bromley on Tuesday night.

When asked about the reported interest in Watt from rival clubs, Slade, 55, said: “There’s been interest in several of our players but the first thing for Tony is to get fit.

“He’s been out for a good few months now and it was his first run-out and that’s something to build on and it’s as simple as that.”

The former Celtic and Standard Liege man came on at half-time at Hayes Lane and showed his ability with several impressive runs.

On Watt’s performance for the Addicks, Slade said: “Tony has got great ability.

“He overdoes it sometimes and took too many touches at times, but that comes with his thirst and wanting to get on the ball and hurt the opposition.

“He probably did too much at times and we were probably guilty of that once or twice in the second period – or maybe more than that – rather than moving it quickly which might have opened them up.”
