Charlton have been crying out for a manager like Russell Slade, according to captain Johnnie Jackson.

Experienced manager Slade was named Addicks boss at the start of June following spells at Cardiff City and Leyton Orient.

Since Roland Duchatelet bought the club in January 2014, the Belgian tycoon has favoured appointing managers from his network of clubs.

However, Duchatelet put his faith in Slade and Jackson believes he is the type of manager the club has been “crying out for”.

When asked whether it feels like a fresh start following a disastrous season on and off the pitch, Jackson said: “It does, people are going to say ‘you’re going to say that’, but there’s a real freshness about the place with new lads coming in.

“Like it or not a more British feel about the place is beneficial with a British manager which we haven’t had for a while.

“He knows the league inside out and has been successful at the level which is what we’ve been crying out for.”

With Slade at the helm, Charlton have signed three players with extensive Football League experience in Ricky Holmes, Lee Novak and Nicky Ajose.

Ajose took the headlines with a second-half hat-trick in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, but Jackson was pleased with the display of all three new players.

The 33-year-old said: “Hopefully you saw the start of a good partnership between Nicky and Lee, who put a couple on a plate for him.

“I think my Nan might have put a couple of them away.

“But it’s always good for the new boys to do well and show the people that came along that they’re good players and can play their part.

“They know the league which is something we’ve been crying out for. They’ve all scored goals at the level and are proven.

“They’ve settled in and seem like good lads who want to work hard and do well for the team.”

Charlton are one of the favourites to secure promotion from League One this season and that is a tag Jackson believes is justified.

“I’m looking around the squad now and I’m thinking we have good quality for this level,” he added.

“Lads that have been there and done, myself included and players like [Chris] Solly. Ricky [Holmes] has just had a promotion himself, Nicky and Lee scored a lot of goals in this league last year.

“If we can add a few more I think we have the makings of a good squad for this level.”
