Russell Slade was pleased with the performance of West Ham youngster Alex Pike in Charlton’s pre-season victory against Welling United.

Pike, who has been at West Ham since the age of 11, played 45 minutes at Park View Road as the Addicks claimed a comfortable 4-1 win.

The 19-year-old only linked up with Charlton last Thursday but Slade was happy with his work against National League South side Welling.

Speaking after the friendly, Slade said: “I was pleased with him.

“We spoke to West Ham and they were more than happy for us to have a look at him.

“He’s only been in for a couple of days but I’ve been pleased with him – he’s put in a nice little performance there.”

Pike was one of four triallists who featured for Slade’s side with former Tottenham prospect Emmanuel Sonupe and experienced duo Lewis Buxton and Andrew Crofts also getting 45 minutes under their belts.

All four players will get another chance to impress on Tuesday when the Addicks make the short journey to Hayes Lane to take on Neil Smith’s Bromley.
