Nicky Ajose has revealed Charlton was the only club he held talks with over a switch from Swindon Town.

Former Manchester United youth player Ajose scored 25 goals for the Robins last season and was on the radar of several clubs.

Championship trio Birmingham, Preston and Bristol City were believed to be tracking the 24-year-old ahead of the summer window.

Ajose admitted he wanted to experience Championship football next year but says he only ever discussed a move with the Addicks.

The ex-England U17 international said: “I wanted to play in the Championship this year but I wasn’t prepared to wait until the last day of the window and take the risk of it falling through.

“When Swindon say it is alright to go then that half makes your mind up as well.

“I have only spoken to one club and that is Charlton Athletic so I am happy with how it has turned out.”

Ajose, who signed a three-year deal with Charlton last week, said the South Londoners approached Swindon towards the end of May.

His move took several weeks to finalise but Ajose insists he is delighted to join Russell Slade’s Charlton.

He added: “It was about the end of May that I knew there was a bit of interest but they didn’t have a manager at the time so it was a case of waiting for the new manager to come in and making sure he still wanted me.

“From there they spoke to Lee [Power] and he was happy and came to some sort of agreement.

“Then it was up to me and it took about three weeks with different things but finally it got done and I am delighted.”
