Nicky Ajose wants to prove he is one of the best strikers in League One with new club Charlton.

The 24-year-old, who scored 25 goals in 40 games for Swindon Town last season, has signed a three-year deal with the Addicks.

He became Russell Slade’s third signing since taking over in the Valley hotseat following deals for Ricky Holmes and Lee Novak.

Ajose finished the 2015/16 campaign as the second top goalscorer in League One and the forward is determined to prove his success was not a fluke.

When asked about the pressure that is put on summer arrivals, Ajose said: “I only feel pressure from myself.

“If I look back, the season before last I finished on loan at Crewe, now that was pressure when you are bottom of the league.

“I scored eight goals in a team which should have got relegated really but we were able to stay up on the last day.

“That was almost a bigger achievement than the season with Swindon because in that team you are getting very little chances and I look back now and I don’t understand how I scored two goals, let alone eight.”

The Bury-born star added: “I’m going to embrace it [the pressure].

“People are going to be looking at me because there is a fee involved and a bit of talk about it but I embrace it and I want to prove that I am the best striker in this league.

“I say best, well a top striker in this league and that [last season] was not just a fluke.”

Ajose admits his final goal tally last term was surprising, particularly as he had only scored four goals by November.

The former Peterborough player missed the first six games of the season but quickly found his feet and netted 11 goals in Swindon’s final 14 games.

Ajose now has his sights set on a productive run in the Charlton side and ultimately wants to fire the club back into the Championship.

The ex-Manchester United youth player said: “I am looking forward to it. Russell Slade, I don’t know him personally, he is just the manager who brought me in.

“I am looking forward to proving myself to a new set of players, a new group of fans and I know what I can do.

“Hopefully if I can stay fit first and foremost I know I will be firing and hopefully we can get promotion.”
