Charlton chief executive Katrien Meire says the club are looking at several British managers after missing out on Chris Wilder.

The Addicks looked set to appoint Wilder as their new boss following the resignation of Jose Riga, who announced he was leaving the Valley after the final game of the season.

Charlton were close to securing Wilder’s services but the former Northampton boss instead joined Sheffield United.

Meire claims that following the Wilder setback, the club have already lined up potential candidates to take over in the Valley hotseat.

The CEO told Press Association Sport: “It got out, we got a signed agreement, there was a clause in there he had full control over player recruitment, but he gets approached by another club.

“We're looking now into the process and we have several British or English experienced managers. We're looking into it.

“[The new manager needs] experience and also - what we think was one of the main problems – [to overcome] so many poor moments of discipline among the players.

“He will need to go back to the core Charlton is about - a hard-working footballing team - and make everybody work for the same kind of goal.

“It’s not just general discipline problems, but somebody that can bring a team spirit back.

“It's disruptive to your business [to have so many managerial changes] and that's why we are now relegated. We had too many managers in a short time.”

Belgian millionaire Roland Duchatelet’s approach when bringing in managers and players has been highly criticised by Charlton fans.

Meire, 31, insists the Addicks will look to sign players with experience of English football this summer.

She said: “We only did one [signing from within the network] last season and that's it.

“But the main focus for League One will be obviously recruiting experience from League One, League Two and some Championship, I think.

“It's too early [to say how transfers will change]. Probably we recruited players that didn't play enough games in the seasons before, so when they started playing for us their load was too high and they got too quickly injured.

“That's why we ended up with lots of injuries.”
