Jose Riga insists he has no regrets about returning to Charlton for a second spell following his resignation.

The Belgian quit as Addicks boss shortly after the 3-0 defeat to Burnley today.

Despite his best efforts, Riga could not prevent Charlton’s relegation to League One.

He confirmed he had told owner Roland Duchatelet he was not staying last week.

Speaking after the final game of the season, Riga said: “I’ve decided not to stay. I think you know the answer why.

“It’s not about League One, I took this decision a few days ago.

“So, I think everyone can recognise my investment last time and even this time. It’s not that I think I'm better than League One.

“It’s based on the fact, I took this decision after many thoughts. It’s important to have control before the season.”

Sam Vokes’ strike and two quick-fire second-half goals rounded off a miserable season for the Addicks.

Like most recent games at the Valley, the day will be remembered for the demonstrations as the home supporters organised a sit-in protest outside the West Stand before kick-off.

Three flares, toilet roles and crumpled posters were thrown on to the pitch during the game leading to numerous stoppages.

Riga, unable to pull off his heroics from two years ago, has no regrets about coming back.

He said: “You take risks as a manager, when I arrived it was because it was Charlton.

“I can do it like this because the feeling I got, yeah I wanted to do it for this club. I have no regrets about this club.”

He added: “I told the players after the game that I was leaving and we've shared not very good moments.

“I wish them the very best and thank them because they were in the same situation as me.”
