Johann Berg Gudmundsson says Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is the best teenager he has played with, although Ademola Lookman is not far behind.

Catford-born Gomez spent just one full season at Charlton but his performances immediately attracted the attention of Premier League clubs.

Last summer the England U21 star was signed by Liverpool for a fee believed to be in the region of £3.5m.

Gomez made seven appearances for the Reds’ first-team – including two Europa League games – before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

Like Gomez, Ademola Lookman has also burst onto the scene in SE7 and was linked with Arsenal, Chelsea and Southampton in January.

When News Shopper asked Gudmundsson whether he has played with any better 18-year-olds than Lookman, the Iceland winger said: “Yes – Joe Gomez.

“Joe is an unbelievable player. His physique and technique is just unreal.

“But Ademola is up there as well – he’s a really good player and so talented. His feet are very good and like Joe, he will be a big player in the future.”

Gudmundsson, 25, has also been impressed by Charlton’s Player of the Year, midfielder Jordan Cousins.

The academy graduate has been in superb form since Christmas and was the supporters’ choice for the second year in a row.

Euro 2016 hopeful Gudmundsson added: “Jordan has been really good, he was really good last season as well.

“We all played better last season than this year but he’s been good and is a young, exciting player.

“He has a big future ahead of him and will be a big player in the future.”
