Roland Duchatelet ‘not actively seeking’ Charlton sale despite opposition from Supporters’ Trust

Charlton fans produced the biggest show of discontent yet at the weekend with thousands lining the streets for a pre-match march to the Valley.

The Championship fixture against Brighton was disrupted on several occasions as fuming fans launched balloons and beach balls on to the pitch.

A group of supporters also confronted the directors’ area where Katrien Meire and Richard Murray watched on before being escorted away by security.

But despite the extreme levels of frustration from Addicks fans, CEO Meire and Non-Executive Chairman Murray have told CAS Trust members that Duchatelet is not seeking potential owners.

The group were told Duchatelet was well aware of the level of discontent in SE7.

CAS Trust had repeatedly requested to meet the owner in order to present him with their concerns, but instead were offered the opportunity to speak to Meire and Murray.

In a statement, the Trust said: “We stressed to Meire and Murray that the conclusion to be drawn from this [surveys carried out by the group] was that the haemorrhage of support we are currently witnessing will only get worse and that the situation is irretrievable.

“The future under Duchatelet’s ownership could only be one of financial decline, escalating protests and increasing ridicule from supporters and the media.

“We could see no business sense in it and it would be a miserable experience for all concerned.

“We stated our position that it would be in everyone's best interest for Duchatelet to take urgent steps to find a new owner for the club.”

Duchatelet was at the Valley last week holding talks with Meire, head coach Jose Riga and other senior officials following the club’s relegation from the Championship.

This year the Belgian millionaire is believed to have been approached by at least two groups interested in buying the club.
