Jorge Teixeira hopes Jose Riga will stay at Charlton next season.

The Addicks boss returned in January in an attempt to repeat his heroics from two seasons ago and avoid the drop.

Despite an improvement in results in recent weeks, Charlton are 11 points from safety and on the brink of relegation following the 1-0 home defeat to Derby.

Teixeira, who played under Riga at Standard Liege, reckons it could be important for the club to keep the Belgian manager.

He said: “The coach is doing a great job with the team but in the end it’s not up to me to decide if he stays or not, it’s up to the board.

“If he stays, he’ll make a good job for the club and we’re going to be happy to have him.

“Yes [I hope he stays], he has a great relationship with the players and we’re improving as a team and it can be important for the club if he stays.”

Derby’s winner came when Johnny Russell headed past Nick Pope in the 60th minute - it was the 20th goal Charlton have conceded from a corner this season.

Teixeira admits the South Londoners must take responsibility on the pitch.

The 29-year-old added: “It’s very disappointing as it’s not the first goal from a corner.

“We’ve conceded from corners which have taken points which are now important.

“We work in training and the coach does what he can, but it’s up to us players to have the responsibilities on the pitch.”

The Portuguese defender joined Charlton on a four-and-a-half-year deal in January - but does not want to think about playing in the third tier of English football.

The Addicks will be relegated if they fail to beat Bolton tomorrow.

Teixeira said: “You can’t think about League One, we still have a possibility to stay up so in the end we’ll see.

“Now, we have to win at Bolton and hope other teams lose.”
