Charlton boss Jose Riga insisted the officials made a mistake to allow QPR’s opener which led to a cruel 2-1 defeat at Loftus Road.

The hosts went ahead on the stroke of half-time thanks to Matt Phillips' effort, but the Addicks players were fuming after Junior Hoilett appeared to be standing in an offside position.

Charlton battled back through Jordan Cousins’ equaliser – and looked like claiming a winner late on – but it was Rangers who found the net in the 94th minute to condemn Riga’s side to another defeat.

The Belgian boss was disappointed with the decision to allow Rangers’ opener.

He said: “I’m not sure the goal they scored was valid – as it can be an offside position.

“He will never say ‘we made a mistake’, it’s not often they recognise it. It’s not a question of whether he touched the ball or not – he affected the situation.

“When you have influence over the action [it’s offside]. I’ll need to see it again but my analysts say it was offside.”

Riga added: “But in our situation we receive nothing you know.

“It’s easier to be a side in a higher ranking than us but I am proud of what the players are showing recently – there’s still a few games left and we are performing.”

After a scrappy start in W12, winger Callum Harriott tested Alex Smithies with a curling strike that the stopper had to push wide.

Lively forward Sebastian Porter then missed a glorious opportunity from five yards, before Rod Fanni’s header drifted wide of the post.

Rangers took the lead in injury-time when Phillips’ cross evaded his teammates in the box but still trickled into the far corner.

The Addicks, who had won three of their last six games, emerged from the break well.

Harriott dribbled into the box before unleashing a fine strike past Smithies, only for the crossbar to prevent Charlton from drawing level.

They did not have to wait long for the equaliser, however, with Chris Solly finding Cousins in the box and the midfielder rifling into the bottom corner.

The Addicks wasted numerous chances to claim the three points – Ademola Lookman blasted over before Igor Vetokele was kept out by Smithies.

And they were made to pay in added-time when Abdenasser El Khayati beat Pope with a superb finish.

Riga says his side deserved the win in west London but were left to rue their wastefulness in front of goal.

“We had some opportunities in the second-half, the first-half was not so easy,” Riga added.

“In the second-half we wanted them to move it more quickly and believe, we did very well and created opportunities.

“I think we deserved the win. As manager you do all you can – play with three defenders. And then we concede a cruel goal, but I felt we were the best team on the pitch.”

Charlton could be relegated next week if they lose to Derby.
