Charlton head coach Jose Riga still believes that his side are capable of surviving relegation to League One after a desirable performance in a 0-0 stalemate at Portman Road.

The result, however, still leaves the Addicks seven points adrift of 21st placed Rotherham, with only six matches left to play.

The visitors made three changes to the side that beat Birmingham at the weekend with Yaya Sanogo, Chris Solly and Ademola Lookman coming in for Igor Vetokele, Marco Motta and Yun Suk-Young.

It was Charlton who created more opportunities in the first-half including a Jorge Teixeira header that had to be tipped over by Ipswich keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.

Riga’s men continued to look threatening on the counter-attack after the break and it was Bialkowski who was relied upon again by Mick McCarthy’s side as he did excellently to make a double-save from Lookman and Sanogo.

Nevertheless, Charlton could not quite grab the three points that would have reflected their performance, but Riga is hopeful that the effort showed could warrant vital points in future matches as they battle to beat the drop.

“We deserved to win the game, what can I ask more of my players,” the Belgian said.

“They gave everything, so we’re disappointed because we only gained a point.

“Still in our situation, with an added point, I still believe. I just hope that the teams around us at some point will lose points.”

Despite the physicality of the hosts, Charlton more than matched them and injuries to Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Alou Diarra signalled the Addicks’ relentless efforts to bring three points back to The Valley.

And Riga was proud of how his players went about their business at Portman Road.

He said: “We knew before coming here that it would be a physical game but I don’t know what happened with Johann, I just hope that he will be fit for the next game.

“Luck goes against us with that, but again I’m proud of what the team produced afterwards.

“We knew that they would use long balls and it’s not easy to work with, but we had opportunities in the first half and were unlucky as we were not able to get the win.”

The return of the likes of Sanogo and Vetokele to Riga’s disposal is an added boost ahead of a make or break time for the Addicks and the former Standard Liege head coach admits that they have to be realistic of their aims heading into Saturday’s away tie against QPR.

He said: “We are realistic on the situation and while, it’s a great performance, we have to only win matches, so we need a lot from the next six games.

“It’s good to have the kind of players such as Sanogo in my squad and I’m able to change some players and I’m happy with their performances.

“We shall see how their fitness levels are until Saturday and will see what happens from there.”
