A Standard Liege fans’ group insists their protests forced Charlton owner Roland Duchatelet to leave the Belgian club.

And they have urged disgruntled Addicks supporters to continue with their efforts to oust the unpopular businessman.

Duchatelet sold Les Rouches last summer after a controversial four-year spell.

One prominent Standard Liege fans' group Publik Hysterik Kaos says they helped send the Belgian millionaire packing with a series of protests.

The former president, a man called "Reno", spoke about how fans once stormed into Duchatelet’s office demanding instant changes.

He told News Shopper: “We gave Roland Duchatelet one year to organise and put together a competitive squad - but we quickly understood that the situation was going to get out of control.

“He made stupid decisions and the level of the team was very poor. The groups started to sing songs against him: ‘Duchatelet resign, you are here for the money, we are here for the club.’

News Shopper:

“After two years the official fans’ club group La Famille des Rouches joined us and thousands of fans protested in the street and that’s when the relationship broke between us and Duchatelet.

“Fans entered his office to shout at him and demand necessary changes – our club was losing its best players and more importantly, its identity.

“We saw him less and less in the last few months of his ownership - the unrest led to him selling up.”

Publik Hysterik Kaos was founded in April 2004 and Reno joined three years later.

He stepped down as president at the end of last season, ending a successful six-year reign - but he is still a member and creates banners and merchandise.

Standard Liege protests intensified in October 2014 when fans invaded the pitch during their league game against Zulte Waregem.

Barring two supporters, the Valley faithful are yet to cause trouble on the playing surface but have held a mock funeral, interrupted a TV game with inflatable balls and staged a 74th-minute walkout.

Reno has urged Addicks fans to keep the protests going.

The 35-year-old said: “They must continue with big actions outside the stadium as we did.

“The empty stadium, flyers, stickers - there are so many ways to protest - if we can help Charlton fans put this man out of football then no problem.

“Duchatelet tried to empty Standard of its traditions and started to talk about stupid business ideas like a children’s carousel around the stadium.

News Shopper:

“You could just tell that he was very tired when he left us because he didn't expect to have so much pressure on him at a football club.”

After a horror season with three different managers, the Addicks are six points from safety with only eight games remaining.

Reno fears for Charlton's future under the Belgian tycoon.

He added: “Duchatelet is in the world of football only for business - he doesn’t have any knowledge about football and he doesn't know how to lead a football club to success.

“He is a multi-millionaire but he will never invest in the team to be competitive.

“He wants to decide about everything and doesn't want to trust professional staff with good experience in football.

“Charlton won't go bankrupt but the club’s sporting future is not bright with Duchatelet there.”

Under new owner Bruno Venanzi, Standard Liege are seventh in the league and recently won the Belgian Cup, the equivalent of the FA Cup in England.
