Marco Motta admits he did not know why Charlton fans were protesting during the 2-0 win over Middlesbrough.

The Addicks picked up three valuable points against the promotion hopefuls yesterday - thanks to second-half goals from Jorge Teixeira and Callum Harriott.

The game was overshadowed by demonstrations from home supporters which took place before, during and after the victory.

However, Motta, 29, who has impressed since joining the South Londoners last month, was unaware of the fans’ unrest at the club.

He said: “I arrived here a few weeks ago and I don't know about the situation [protesting fans], I need to think only about the pitch - that’s my job.

“Unfortunately, it was not good when I saw this but I don't know why there is this situation.

“We played very well today and usually I only think about my team.”

Charlton fans held a mock funeral, threw beach balls on to the pitch and staged a 74th-minute walkout - all in frustration towards owner Roland Duchatelet, in front of the Sky TV cameras.

Referee Darren Deadman had to stop the match on three occasions, including when whistles were blown from the home crowd, which halted a promising Boro attack.

Motta has been filling in for the injured Chris Solly at right-back and insists there is enough quality in the Charlton team to avoid the drop.

The former Juventus defender added: “Yes there’s enough quality here.

“Sometimes, football can be strange and I think in this team there is talent.

“We need to work hard every day in training and try to stay up because the past is the past and this is the present.

“We have a good mix of experienced players and good young talent - I’m here to use my experience and help the team win.”

Charlton’s first triumph at the Valley since last November reduced the gap from safety to five points - they travel to Yorkshire to take on Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
