Harry Lennon has reiterated his love for Charlton – insisting that he will not leave even if the club is relegated this season.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season in SE7 and was a first-team regular before a red card against Preston led to a three-match suspension.

Charlton have endured a dismal campaign and just six league wins all season has left them seven points from safety with 10 games remaining.

While Lennon believes a great escape is still possible, he says that he has no plans to leave even if the club drops to League One.

When News Shopper asked the defender whether he hopes to spend a long time at the Valley, he said: “Of course, hopefully.

“I want to stay at the club and if we do go down help them get back in the Championship and then even further if I can.

“I’ve still got another two years here and I’m very happy. I’ve been here since I was a seven. I love it here so there’s no reason to leave.”

Lennon signed his first professional contract in 2013 after spending almost a decade in the club’s youth system.

He says it is an “honour” to play for the Addicks as the club means a great deal to him.

“I have been here since a very young age and my Dad lives in Eltham so obviously I’ve always had a big link with the club,” he added.

“It does mean a lot, not only to me but also my family.

“That’s why it was so good to get a run in the team, it was a real honour. Hopefully that can continue.”

The Barking-born star excelled on a brief loan spell at League One club Gillingham in October before being recalled by former caretaker boss Karel Fraeye.

Jose Riga was appointed manager in January in the hope that he could pull off another relegation escape having kept the club up at the end of the 2013-14 campaign.

The Belgian has found it more difficult this time around, but Lennon says the spirit in the camp has at least improved since his arrival.

“Jose wants us to play the right way – to get the ball down, press and work hard,” he said.

“The spirit in the team, even with the position we are in, has got a lot better over the last couple of months. I think we are in it together.

“You can see that Jose is passionate about the club – no manager wants to get relegated and he just wants to keep us up again like he did last time.

“We all know the job we’ve got to do and hopefully it’s still possible.”
