Johann Berg Gudmundsson admitted Charlton only had themselves to blame after another set-piece goal led to a 2-1 defeat at Preston last night.

Joe Garner gave Preston the lead on 35 minutes when he rose highest to nod his header past Stephen Henderson.

The opener at Deepdale was the fourth straight goal Charlton have conceded from a corner following the 3-0 defeat at Fulham at the weekend.

The Addicks responsed immediately, however, with Icelandic midfielder Gudmundsson drilling home the equaliser just two minutes later.

Charlton failed to match their first-half display after the break and were condemned to their 18th league defeat of the season when Callum Robinson netted the winner.

Gudmundsson said: “It is very difficult [to take] – in the first half we were the much better team. They couldn’t control us and we kept the ball really well.

“They got the goal from a set-piece, a mistake from us, so the only thing we can blame is ourselves. Overall, we should not have lost.

“We definitely should have got at least a point from this game.

“It’s tough when you’re losing games despite playing quite well.

“We are keeping the ball; are looking quite dangerous but obviously not taking advantage of that and are conceding some silly goals.

“That’s not a good combination but we have to keep going.”

Reading travel to the Valley on Saturday with Charlton now seven points from safety with 13 games remaining.

Gudmundsson, who signed for the Addicks in the summer of 2014, added: “We are still believing.

“We have got a home game coming next. Hopefully the fans will be behind us 100 per cent, they were great tonight and we want to get them three points.

“We need to start winning games and quick, and hopefully we can do that Saturday with the help of the fans.”
