Ademola Lookman was right not to leave Charlton in the January transfer window, according to Jordan Cousins.

The exciting 18-year-old has been linked with several Premier League clubs since breaking into the Addicks’ first-team in November, with Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City plotting moves.

Despite substantial interest, Lookman made it clear that he wanted to remain at the Valley to continue his development.

The forward marked his return from injury with a goal against Rotherham on January 30, and Cousins insists his Charlton teammate has a bright future ahead of him.

However, the midfielder says SE7 is the best place for Lookman at this stage of his career.

He told News Shopper: “I speak to him regularly and I think he’s very comfortable where he is right now.

“If he asked for my advice, I’d tell him that this is the best place for you right now. Who knows what’s going to happen in six months’ time?

“But right now he’s playing games, he’s gaining experience and getting better - so why would you want to go to a big club and perhaps struggle to play?

“And he knows that, he’s not stupid and I’m sure he’s getting the right guidance.”

Having trained with Lookman since his call-up to the first-team in November, Cousins has seen first-hand his undoubted quality.

But Cousins insists Lookman’s temperament is just as impressive as his ability.

The 21-year-old said: “He’s a very good player - as we have seen this season he just needs one touch and he can score.

“I don’t really come up against him in training because he’s out there on the wing but he is a tricky customer - I wouldn’t want him running at me in a game to be honest.

“The thing I like about Ade is that if you see him in training or around the building, nothing fazes him.

“He’s very humble, very quiet, he’s just like a boy enjoying football in the park.

“Nothing seems to faze him and that’s a top quality to have and something which will take him a very long way.”

Cousins knows from personal experience how publicity can affect a player’s form, but the Greenwich-born star doesn’t think this will be an issue with Lookman.

“Some kids are put off by the exposure,” he added.

“Even me personally when I was younger and got some attention from other clubs, I might have lost my form for a couple of games, but that’s not the case with Ade.

“He’s a real talent and hopefully he can continue performing well for us this season.”
