Bromley bowed out of the Kent Senior Cup at a wet and windy Hayes Lane on Tuesday evening, when Charlton Athletic’s Academy side proved too good, winning by two first-half goals.

But it was a case of one team not taking their chances in front of goal, and the other making the most of theirs.

The hosts started the game on the front foot and Alex Wall headed wide from Aaron Tumwa’s cross in the 7th minute, before chipping the advancing goalkeeper two minutes later only for the ball to loop just wide of the post.

Reece Prestedge shot straight at Nick Pope in the Charlton goal after Bradley Goldberg had put him through.

However, with their first worthwhile attack the visitors opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Joseph Aribo caught the Bromley defence napping to cut in from the left to score in the far corner.

Eight minutes later Joshua Umerah doubled the scoreline with a simple tap in at the far post, following Brendon Hanlan’s penetrating cross across the face of the goal.

Adam Coombes was denied by a defensive block on 34 minutes from Wall’s cross, and six minutes later Paul Rodgers whipped in a cross from the right which the newcomer met on the volley to send just wide of the upright.

The visitors might have increased their lead just after the restart when Mikhail Kennedy’s dipping drive sailed agonisingly over the crossbar.

Bromley should have reduced the arrears on 56 minutes when Lee Minshull headed on Prestedge’s centre but Goldberg, with only Pope to beat, was slow to react and the goalkeeper easily claimed the ball.

The Charlton goalkeeper kept the scoreline intact three minutes later when he reacted with a smart save at his near post from Sean Francis’s flicked shot from close-range.

Wall wasted a good opportunity wildly firing over following a mistake by Terrell Thomas, and Coombes’ goal-bound header was deflected for a corner as Bromley had the better of the second half.

But Charlton always looked comfortable and might have added to the score in the final minute when Alan Julian reacted brilliantly to palm away Regan Charles-Cook’s right footed drive.
