Charlton boss Jose Riga has urged fans to trust him after the 6-0 drubbing at Hull.

The result was the Addicks’ heaviest league defeat since a 7-0 thrashing by Brighton in 1983.

Abel Hernandez’s first-half hat-trick and strikes from Robert Snodgrass, Mo Diamé and Isaac Hayden made it an unhappy return for Riga.

However, the former Metz boss, who saved Charlton from the drop two seasons ago, wants supporters to trust him.

He said: “I want them [the fans] to trust me. I’m not here for me.

“I’m here just because they appreciate me from last time, not only because we stayed up but because they know that I’m completely involved in this club.

“When I say I need everybody, I also mean the supporters. They are key for us.

“The players must work hard daily and then give everything on the pitch and then the link with the supporters will work again.

“It’s not written that you can survive in the same way as we did last time, we might have to find another.

“It’s not the same situation as before, the last time the owner had just taken control of the club, the staff was already there and we were a squad. Now it’s different.

“But I don't say yes just on emotion, I know what responsibility means. I thought about the fans during the game. I will do and give everything for this club.”

The Addicks got off to the worst possible start when Rhys Williams was dispossessed on the halfway line by Hernandez who sprinted on and slotted the ball past Stephen Henderson.

The first goal came after only nine minutes and the second followed shortly as Williams and Roger Johnson stood off Hernandez and he curled the ball into the top corner.

Sam Clucas found Snodgrass in mountains of space in the box and his finessed strike beat Henderson.

The Tigers’ fourth came when Hernandez completed his first-half hat-trick in just 39 minutes - Diame and Hayden added goals in the second-half to round off Charlton’s miserable day.

Despite today’s drubbing, Riga believes that he can repeat the same heroics that made him so popular at the Valley in 2014 and will also hope to bring in more players.

Riga added: “I’ve never been relegated in my life and I don't want to be.

“That’s why I was coming back - Charlton means a lot to me and I have something special here. I believe in my capacities and everyone wants the same. This can make the difference.

“I hope so [bring new players in] because it’s part of the reality that we have to face.

“The team has to be helped and so we need to find the right targets. I am sure you didn't see the real value of the players today.”

Riga confirmed that owner Roland Duchatelet contacted him two days ago to ask him to return to SE7.

He said: “Two days ago is when the owner contacted me. He asked me if I wanted to come back and I said yes to do the job.

“I’m not a liar, I had such a good feeling with Charlton so I said yes. Last time, there was commitment on the pitch and around the club and that’s what I’m looking for now.”

The South Londoners are winless in 11 games and take on Blackburn at the Valley next week - fans have already started to plan for another post-match protest.
