Nick Pope insists that Charlton can recover from their dire run of form and avoid relegation this season.

The Addicks have won just one of their last ten fixtures in all competitions and a dismal run has left the club three points adrift of safety in the Championship.

A 5-0 drubbing at Huddersfield – three days after a woeful loss to League One Colchester – resulted in caretaker boss Karel Fraeye being removed from his position.

Jose Riga, who instigated a great escape at the Valley two years ago, has returned to the club as head coach.

And Pope remains adamant that a dramatic upturn in results is possible.

Speaking before the Huddersfield loss, the 23-year-old stopper told News Shopper: “Over the last couple of seasons we have been in trouble and escaped.

“We know what it takes and we’re definitely capable of getting the points needed.

“We’ve all got to believe in ourselves, be mentally strong and keep going and hopefully the points will come.

“Mentally you’ve got to be strong and put things out of your mind and concentrate on getting the points that matter.

“But yeah, of course, we still think we can turn this around.”

Pope, a graduate of the Ipswich Town Academy, has only played 21 league games for Charlton since signing in 2011.

However, the goalkeeper impressed during the FA Cup defeat at Colchester, making several fine saves to prevent the League One strugglers from recording an even more convincing win.

“I was delighted to be back involved, it’s been a few months without a game which has been tough,” Pope admitted.

“I was obviously missing first team action so it was pleasing to get out there - I was quite busy and made a few saves, but as a keeper that’s what you’re there to do.”

Pope – who has spent the majority of the last two seasons on loan at Bury and York – also acknowledged that the performance in Essex was not good enough.

He said: “I was happy with how I played and thought I did quite well, but it was a disappointing result overall.

“You don’t expect to win the FA Cup but it’s great for the club and the fans to go on a little run.

“It can generate momentum to take into the league and obviously you never want to lose any game – so that was a tough one to take.”
