Karel Fraeye praised Charlton fans for their role in today’s long-awaited 3-1 win - despite supporters protesting before the game.

The Addicks ended a 12-game winless run with an emphatic victory over an in-form Sheffield Wednesday.

The visitors came into the match unbeaten in 11 games - knocking Arsenal out of the Capital One Cup in the process.

But strikes from Johnnie Jackson, Simon Makienok and Reza Ghoochannejhad made sure of ending that streak - and picking up their first three points since August 22.

Fraeye said: “The supporters were excellent throughout the whole game.

“They played their part which gave us a massive win.

“It just goes to show that hard work pays off - we trained on the pitch physically and watched videos of Sheffield Wednesday.

“They had an intensive week but that was good because we knew what to expect from the opposition.”

Jackson had the South Londoners in front with a thumping header from a Johann Berg Gudmundsson corner in the 26th minute.

The Icelandic star was provider once again but this time for Makienok who was able to tap in the drilled cross.

Shortly after the break, Morgan Fox, the receiver of a lot of abuse from home fans in the first-half, unselfishly put the ball on a plate for Ghoochannejhad to make it 3-0.

Fraeye remained coy when he asked about his position and possibly taking the reigns on a full-time basis.

He added: “I will repeat that my position is not important.

“The players performed and we showed our quality.

“We changed up formations just like we did at Middlesbrough and MK Dons and today it worked.

“The skipper scored the important first goal which gave players, fans, everyone a boost around the stadium.

“Winning before the international break is the best feeling.”

With just over 15 minutes remaining, Forestieri pulled one back for the Owls but Charlton stood firm.

Charlton remain in the relegation zone but are now only one point away from safety.
