Guy Luzon has defended Nick Pope after the Charlton Athletic goalkeeper came under criticism for his performance against Fulham last week.

The 23-year-old stopper, who has featured in all of Charlton’s league games this term, failed to deal with a routine free-kick against the Cottagers, allowing Ryan Tunnicliffe to pounce and give the visitors the lead.

The Addicks admirably recovered from a two-goal deficit and earned a point through goals from substitute Johnnie Jackson and Jordan Cousins, but Pope did not escape criticism for his blunder.

However, when questioned about Pope’s performance, Luzon told News Shopper: “But he also made a lot of great saves and helped us a lot in the game.

“We don’t judge players after one mistake – not a striker, not a defender and not the goalkeeper.

“We are a team and when we make a mistake we make a mistake together.

“If someone wants to blame someone, you can blame me, no problem.

“But our players give everything and they want to produce the result and I felt that against Fulham and I’m sure we will continue with this attitude against Reading.”
