Charlton manager Guy Luzon was in bullish mood following his side’s 2-0 victory over QPR at The Valley on the opening day of the Championship campaign.

Second half efforts from Tony Watt and Morgan Fox, the latter with his first goal for the club, gave the Addicks a perfect start to the season.

The second period saw the hosts play some attractive attacking football, a trait Luzon was keen to highlight.

“With this side I will promise that we’ll always go for the win and get three points,” he said.

“In football you can be afraid to lose or dare to win – and with me I always dare to win, and that’s what this team will do.

“It was a perfect start for the first game.

“To win like that in a London derby in front of our own fans was special - it was an unbelievable atmosphere today.

“With players making their debut in the league today too, it will give them all a lot of confidence as the season moves forward.

“We’re still a new team, but we have a lot of quality and I’m sure we will only get better.”

The manager elected to start with young Karlan Ahearne-Grant, who partnered Simon Makienok in attack, an alteration which meant Watt was on the bench for.

Luzon said: “The change to bring Tony on changed the game - he was brave in attack and showed his qualities.

“He didn’t start because of something that happened in training, but I know he had the skill to change the game.”

The boss added: “He accepted it, because when the coach makes the decision he has to – when we needed him he performed.

“There’s no doubt about his talent, and I’m sure he’ll be pivotal this season and I won’t be fining him.”

Charlton came under sustained pressure from their opponents in the opening 20 minutes of the season’s opener, and Luzon was keen to praise the efforts of his new squad and the character they showed.

He explained: “The first half was quite tough to begin with, but we overcame that.

“Football is about character as well as quality, and we showed that to ride out the tough start.

“They have quality and experience, so to come through that on some of the player’s debuts I’m very happy.

“We have quality to perform even better than this.”

The head coach added: “My focus is solely on my players, and my confidence and belief in them.

“The target is always to win the next game.

“I think we can finish high when we have a full squad.”

Luzon also hinted although the club has already made seven signings this summer, fans have not seen the last of the recruitment in SE7.

He said: “I hope we’ll sign another two players and then we can have a full squad.

“Then I believe we can achieve good things.”
