Tony Watt was happy to be back on the scoresheet as he notched his first goal for eight games in the 2-1 win over Leeds United.

The Scotsman hauled the Addicks level in the 75th minute, volleying home a Johann Berg Gudmundsson cross to cancel out Steve Morrison’s first-half opener for the visitors.

A Yoni Buyens penalty five minutes later gave Charlton all three points but Watt was relieved to score what was his fifth goal of the season for the south Londoners.

“I needed that,” he admitted.

“It’s my first one since Cardiff. I need to be scoring goals if I want to push us on and win games.

“I’m lucky I got one today, if not I’d have been tossing and turning all night.

“I’m enjoying it but today I wasn’t at my best. That’s what they say, maybe you don’t play your best but you score.

“In other games I’m playing well and I don’t score. I’m happy I scored. I could have done more in the game, I know I could have.

“I just made the wrong decision a lot of times.”

The former Celtic striker was booked for an over exuberant celebration, as he appeared to approach the crowd to high-five some supporters.

Watt felt a bit hard done by the referee’s decision.

“I didn’t go in the crowd,” he said.

“He (the referee) said I went in the crowd but they put their hand over. It was natural.

“I was just behind the advertising boards. I don’t think it’s a yellow card but he’s the man who makes the decision.”

Yoni Buyens’ winning strike was he’s eighth successful penalty out of eight. Leeds weren’t as clinical with a first-half penalty of their own, as Stephen Henderson kept Billy Sharpe’s effort out.

“Yoni doesn’t miss,” Watt beamed.

“I said that to one of the Leeds players, that he won’t miss, there’s no point trying to put him off. He’s as cool as you like.

“Hendo is a joy to work with. He’s brilliant. He’s a good lad and a magnificent goalkeeper.

“He makes unbelievable saves every week. He’s very, very good.”

With the season close to an end, Watt was questioned as to how he sees the club progressing over the next year.

“It depends on what the owner wants to do in the summer,” he explained.

“If he brings in some players, to challenge. Just now I think we need a player or two, or three. We’ve got a good young squad and we’ve got good players all over the board.

“Some of them are out of contract soon and we need to tie them up and build on that. We can’t let anyone go.

“We’ve done well over the last two or three months. It depends on how we keep going. We need to hit next season with a bang.

“Hopefully we will have a player or two and we’ll see what happens.

He continued, “We’ve a good togetherness in the squad. Everybody is having a laugh and a joke but when it comes to game time we’re serious. We take our roles seriously.”

Charlton return to action away at Birmingham City next Saturday, in their last away game of the campaign.
