Guy Luzon was disappointed as Charlton had a seemingly good goal disallowed in the 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday.

Chris Eagles finished past Keiren Westwood after being played through by Johann Berg Gudmundsson but the effort was ruled out by the assistant referee’s flag midway through the first half.

Replays showed the winger had been well onside.

Despite dominating the first half, the Addicks then fell behind when Caolan Lavery converted a cross from the right hand side.

The hosts had the better of the chances in the second half but Gudmundsson fired Charlton level late on, pouncing after Eagles' shot had been parried into his path by the Owls keeper.

Luzon felt that it would have been a different game had Charlton taken the lead through Eagles in the first period.

“In the first half i think we had great moments,” said the Israeli head coach.

“We had three, four, five great chances to score. We scored one, Eagles scored - it was onside, not offside.

“It was completely a goal and I think if the referee had seen it and didn’t make that mistake it would have completely changed the game.

“It’s a mistake by the linesman because Eagles made the movement from the second line, he wasn’t offside.

“The referees are good referees, but this kind of mistake can change games because when we lead 1-0 we would have space to counter attack and to kill the game.

“After that a little bit less concentration and we conceded one. The last two months we’ve had a lot of character, we know how to respond, how to come back.

“First half was ours, second half was Sheffield’s. In their half, we knew how to respond.”

Luzon added: “I will be honest and say that Sheffield had great moments in the second half, they had great chances. We managed to pass this moment and score an important goal.

“We had great chances in the first half, two for Fox, one for Eagles, one for Igor (Vetokele), one for Church. We missed them.

"When you miss this kind of opportunity, you concede at the other end. We’ve shown great character in the last two months.

"When it’s 1-0 to the opponent, we know how to respond. Sometimes we want this kind of game where we come back and draw. Its OK, we continue.”

It was a difficult playing surface at Hillsborough but Luzon agreed that the surface didn’t stop the contest from being an entertaining one.

“Despite the pitch, yes,” the SE7 manager said when questioned if it had been enjoyable.

“In the first half we played with good tempo and good aggression and had options to score. Second half it changed.

“Its a difficult stadium, a difficult pitch. It was very hard to play on the ground, play our football.

“Football is a game for momentum. When the momentum is in your hand you need to score, and we missed it.

“What is good is that when the momentum was with Sheffield, we knew how to respond.”

Luzon wouldn’t be drawn into setting his side a specific target for the rest of the campaign.

He explained “Our target now is only to win the next game. And then the next game after and after that.

“Our target it to make maximum points by the end.”

There was a moment of fine sportsmanship towards the end of the game where Tony Watt called a halt to proceedings as the hosts’ Kamil Zayatte was badly injured in the Wednesday penalty area, despite Charlton having a fine chance to score.

Luzon joked he would have preferred play to continue, but praised the Scotsman’s honesty.

“It was nice,” said Luzon.

“It would be better if he scored a goal! It was fair play and it was a good action by Tony.”

The head coach also heaped praise on goalscorer Gudmundsson’s performances this season, as he drew level with top scorer Igor Vetokele’s tally of eleven goals for the campaign.

“Johann has had a great season,” Luzon said.

“He has helped us a lot in the offensive side with goals and assist. He also works very hard in defence. When professional players have talent and work hard, they deserve to score goals.

“He’s done great, but he also has space to improve and he will be better and better.”

The Addicks head to Bolton Wanderers midweek and Luzon hopes Charlton can get back to their very best at the Macron Stadium.

“Bolton on Tuesday, another good game with another good team,” he explained.

“I hope the pitch in Bolton is better than here!

“If it’s better I’m happy, we will try to play more on the ground and more beautiful football.”
