Charlton’s stand-in captain Stephen Henderson hasn’t given up hope of making the play-offs after last night’s 2-1 triumph over in-form Nottingham Forest made it four wins from five.

Keeper Henderson was beaten by Michail Antonio’s low first half equaliser, which came either side of strikes from Frederic Bulot, but stood firm under intense pressure from the visitors late on to ensure his side held on to the three points.

And despite being 16 points behind Brentford in sixth spot, the Valley stopper still believes his side can pull off a late play-off surge.

Henderson said: “Personally, I want to push for the play-offs until it’s mathematically impossible.

“I know it’s very unlikely, but until it’s mathematically impossible I’ll be doing everything I can to be in that play-off spot at the end of the season.

“I’m not happy just to finish 12th or 10th, I want to be pushing higher up because the club deserves to be up there.”

Henderson also believes head coach Guy Luzon deserves credit for the team’s recent revival after a tough start to his tenure in SE7.

The keeper explained: “The manager knows what he wants and the lads have bought into it.

“He’s got a specific way of playing and you can see there is a different way of playing now.

“There’s a lot more pressing, we’re not letting teams on the ball and it’s working for us.

“It was a great win, especially as I’ve just seen the other results and they all went for us again.

“We’re 14 points clear of relegation now and that was the main objective, so happy days.”

Henderson admitted he was delighted to receive the captain’s armband and hear the fans sing his name, but disappointed not to keep another clean sheet.

The Irishman said: “With Jacko and Solly out I found out (about the captaincy) late this evening.

“But it was a special moment for me and up there with one of the best moments of my career right now, especially with the win.

“It’s the best feeling ever (hearing the fans sing his name). It’s what I go through the bad times for, for those sorts of moments.”

Henderson added: “The fans have been great with me and I’m just hoping to repay them every week.

“I’m just annoyed I didn’t keep another clean sheet but it was good finish by the lad to be fair.

“I didn’t think I had a lot to do and I think we deserved the win in the end.

“If you look back at the stats I’m sure we had more attempts on goals.

“It was three points we deserved.”
