Charlton midfielder Jordan Cousins confessed Saturday’s 1-1 Valley draw with Rotherham felt like a loss after the visitors snatched an injury-time equaliser.

Cousins’ 83rd minute strike looked like it was going to be enough to end Charlton’s search for a much-needed victory.

But instead Danny Ward’s late leveller extended their winless run to 12 league games and provoked some boos from the Valley faithful at the final whistle.

And Cousins revealed the supporters’ frustrations were echoed by the players following their 15th draw of the season.

“I think it feels like a loss because we were so close to winning the game,” admitted the Charlton academy graduate.

“It’s up to us to get tight at the back and defend and not concede those goals.

“I’m not too happy right now because I think we should have the three points.

“We have enough experienced players and enough good quality players for the club not to be unconfident.

“As a team we are a good group, we always stick together through a loss or a draw.

“We did it last year so I’m sure we can do it again.”

The 20-year-old added a tight defensive performance was something that Guy Luzon, who was taking charge at The Valley for the first time on Saturday, had worked on in training.

Cousins explained: “He’s setting his ways - he wants us to be a team that’s hard to beat.

“That’s what we have been doing in training all week, working on our shape and being hard to beat.

“We done what the gaffer told us to do (which was to) defend well as a team.

“I don’t think they had many clear cut chances and we had some ourselves, so I think in that way we did well.

“We need to learn how to keep a lead and see off the game.”

The former England U16 captain has played a lot of football this season on the left, a role that was unfamiliar to him before the campaign started.

But Cousins believes he is finally starting to relish the challenge.

He said: “At the start I found it a bit bizarre and it took a bit getting used to because I’ve played most of my first-team career in centre midfield.

“But as the season has gone on, I’ve become to enjoy the position.

“It started when I scored the goal against Wigan.

“I thought maybe there is a future for me in this position.

“Obviously, my number one goal is to play centre-midfield, but I’m a young player, I’m happy to be playing on the pitch and I’ll be doing my best in whatever position my manager plays me.”
