Bob Peeters rued the “easy” goals Charlton conceded in their FA Cup third round defeat by Blackburn.

Charlton were largely outplayed by their Championship rivals, who took the lead after only four minutes through Chris Taylor’s powerful header.

The home side competed as the first half – which was interrupted by a floodlight failure – progressed and equalised in the second, after 59 minutes, through Johann Gudmundsson’s curled free-kick.

Taylor needed only four minutes to restore Blackburn’s lead, however, when he capitalised on Charlton’s static defending, and thereafter, particularly after Yoni Buyens was sent off for a second bookable offence, the visitors remained comfortable as the hosts’ back three gifted them numerous chances.

“First cross in the box was a goal for them,” Peeters said.

“We started to play better, we had some chances. At the moment the lights went off I think we were the better team.

“At half-time we played three at the back and we scored a good goal.

“The second goal we gave away too easy. I know it’s not too easy when you play three at the back but it was an easy goal I think.

“Then you lose Yoni Buyens with the second yellow and you’re down to 10 men.

“Blackburn are a strong team. Hopefully we’ll recover five or six players for the game against Brighton (on Saturday). That’s half a team, so that will make a difference.

“We have only 19 in our squad so if you lose six or seven you don’t have a lot left.”

The small size of Charlton’s squad was increasingly highlighted after Buyens’ red card but Peeters revealed that, in addition to recruiting striker Tony Watt, he expects to imminently have other important players again available.

“The last thing we wanted today was a replay,” he said.

“(Blackburn) didn’t look at the FA Cup as important as well because they had (Rudy) Gestedes, etc, on the bench. But it’s a good experience for the young guns who came on, and who played.

“Hopefully we will recover the likes of (Igor) Vetokele and (Chris) Solly against Brighton.

“Hopefully Rhoys Wiggins is coming back, Frank Moussa we hope to see as well. Oguchi Onewyu we need to see. That makes five or six players.”

“I thought we were outstanding from start to finish,” added Blackburn manager Gary Bowyer. “(It was a) great squad performance.

“We should have had more goals, it’s a simple as that.”
