Bob Peeters insists the FA Cup is as important to Charlton as the Championship.

In the modern era when the relevance of the Cup is being questioned and the owners of football clubs prioritise success in the league and the income that follows it there are growing concerns about the competition's decline.

Charlton are to face Blackburn in the third round in January but while owner Roland Duchatelet’s preference appears to be to prudently run the club, there has been no suggestion from Peeters that he is being discouraged from pursuing a cup run.

“For me, every game is important, especially the FA Cup and especially when you play at home,” he said.

“You need to be very responsible and try to win every game, but the only thing is if you lose a league game, you’ve got an opportunity next week, or even a lot of times three days later, but in an FA Cup when you lose a game it’s finished so that’s the only difference.

“I was hoping for Chelsea or Manchester United at home.

“Okay, it’s going to be a tough game, because we meet them two weeks before the FA Cup.

“It’s always difficult if you play an FA Cup against another Championship team because everybody knows everybody, the way they play, the way they perform, so another division would have been better but it is what it is.”

Charlton host bottom-of-the-table Blackpool in the Championship on Saturday.
