They say in football you don’t always get what you deserve. They also say you make your own luck. ‘They’ should make their minds up!

After Tuesday night’s stunning 1-0 victory at Carrow Road, Norwich fans seem to be very much in the ‘you don’t always get what you deserve’ camp.

Such opinion shows a disappointing lack of acclaim for the tactics of Big Bad Bobby Peeters and the resolve of the Charlton side he put out.

The Addicks deserved something for that.

When traveling to the team at the top of your league, no matter which league it is, you go with a defensive mindset.

Just ask Jose Mourinho about Chelsea’s win at Man City last season.

You make yourselves hard to beat, you look to counter attack as and when you can, but in the main you have to frustrate your hosts, be difficult to break down and see if you can make the home crowd turn.

Do that and you may well get what you deserve.

And turn they did. Late on in the first half, after the Canaries had a goal disallowed, the locals on the terraces turned angry.

It was the correct decision by the referee after Bradley Johnson had decided to try and start an old-fashioned school playground bundle on top of Stephen Henderson.

For the rest of the game, every single decision that went against Norwich was met by cries of anger.

It was at this point I knew Charlton had achieved part of their task.

They deserved credit for that.

There were some hairy moments.

Norwich felt they deserved a penalty – especially when Johnnie Jackson’s attempt to block a cross was heading towards his own goal but was blocked by Andre Bikey’s arm.

It was one of those which could have gone either way, but for the way they had defended, Charlton had deserved that piece of luck.

So it came to the last five minutes and with Norwich throwing everything forward to try and get a probably deserved winner to show for their dominance in chances created, the Addicks countered.

The other footballing proverb I mentioned at the start is that you make your own luck.

The restless Jackson has a habit of doing that.

His shot was deflected past John Ruddy - who took longer to try and get down to the daisy-cutter than it took us to drive home - and gave the Addicks a deserved three points.

You see Norwich fans, I think in football you do get what you deserve.

Your side did not take their chances, you came up against a Charlton side determined not to lose, determined to stick to a game plan and determined to come away with something. They made their own luck.

In football you almost always get what you deserve.

Except against Middlesbrough last Saturday - we deserved to win that!

Come on you reds!
