Chris Solly is edging closer to being available for selection for every Charlton game, according to head coach Bob Peeters.

The full-back’s problems with a long-term knee injury have been well documented and Peeters made clear from the word go when arriving at The Valley this summer he was going to be cautious choosing when to play the 23-year-old.

So far the boss has resisted the temptation to use Solly in any of this season’s midweek games, a strategy which saw the defender left out in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Wolves.

But Peeters confirmed today that policy could well change after the next international break.

“Chris Solly trained today,” the Valley chief said.

“He is looking fit and is getting better and better.

“Until the international break I won’t let him play three games in a week.

“After that if he can cope with one or two training sessions more we will see if he can maybe play three games (in a week) in a few weeks.

“At this moment we have Joe Gomez who is giving us a lot of joy as well, so if we can manage Chris Solly’s knee and develop Joe Gomez then we have two wins.”

It was then put to Peeters if Solly would ever be able to fully shake off the knee problem which at one stage even prompted fears the defender’s promising career could be over.

“I think he is overcoming it already,” the Belgian replied.

“He needs to manage his knee for the rest of his career – that’s what the doctors told him.

“That’s what we try to help him with.

“The player is experienced enough already to tell me whether he can play or not but we need our medical staff to look every week how it stands.

“At this moment he can play Saturday-Saturday and I’m very happy he can achieve that.

“We will see in a few weeks maybe whether he can push that a bit further.”

In line with Charlton’s stated current policy, Solly is highly likely to return for Saturday’s trip to Rotherham with the Addicks only having doubts about one player’s fitness.

Peeters added: “Johann Gudmundsson is still recovering from a groin injury.

“We will see how it goes whether he travels or not to Rotherham.

“The rest of the squad is fit and we hope to keep them fit.”
