Charlton boss Bob Peeters praised his side’s defensive resolve after today’s impressive 1-0 victory over Watford.

Despite a host of chances for the visitors, the Addicks managed to hold on to a narrow lead provided by Yoni Buyens’ penalty after just three minutes.

And the Belgian head coach was pleased to see his side claim their first clean sheet of the season, which was achieved mainly thanks to keeper Stephen Henderson, who made a number of key saves.

Peeters said: “I think he did very well.

“When they played between our lines, he stood his ground and defended the clean sheet.

“I said to my players before the game it’s about time we get a clean sheet because we played six games and it was the first clean sheet we have in the league.

“We know that we are going to score every game again today, whether it’s a penalty or not, but we scored again.

“If you score a goal, you can keep a clean sheet and win the game.”

As well as the fine performance of Henderson, centre-backs Andre Bikey and Tal Ben Haim also impressed, with Peeters delighted with their response to conceding two goals against Brighton in Charlton’s last fixture.

“I was a little bit angry at them after the Brighton game because I think it was un-necessary to give the goals away,” explained the manager.

“But they proved me wrong today and they said: ‘OK, we need to show that we can keep a clean sheet’.”

Despite being awarded what proved to be an early decisive penalty, Peeters was surprised not to see a red-card for Watford keeper Heurelho Gomes after the former Tottenham stopper brought down Igor Vetokele.

“I couldn’t see it (the incident), I thought if he gives it then he’s the last man and it’s a red card,

“The fourth official then told me that there was still coverage (from a defender).

“It was our first opportunity and we punished them.”

Peeters also admitted his unbeaten side might have ridden their luck a bit at the other end.

“I don’t know as I haven’t seen the images, but there was a possible penalty for Deeney as well.

“But lucky for us the referee didn’t give that one.”

Peeters also felt tiredness started to kick in towards the end of the match following the recent internationals.

“First half I think we did very well, but again it was very hard to prepare my players as some were away for the international break.

“Vetokele after 60-70 minutes got very tired and only came back Thursday, and Gudmundsson was struggling with his groin.

“But I was very happy with the game plan and we know that every game we can get some chances and it’s just a matter of putting them away.”
