Lawrie Wilson was delighted to score a brace as Charlton progressed to round two of the Capital One Cup with a 4-0 win over Colchester.

The wideman notched twice in between Yoni Buyens’ penalty and Simon Church’s clincher as the Addicks comfortably overcame the U’s.

Buyens’ opener came as a result of a handball from visiting captain Magnus Okuonghae, which saw the defender red carded, and Wilson believes that made it a lot easier for his side.

“The sending off has killed the game really for Colchester,” he said.

“But we still had to do the job, put the ball in the net and keep hold possession.

“The pitch is bigger this year so that is something that has been emphasised to us - that we do need to keep the ball because you don’t want to be running around the bigger surface.

“There was a lot more room when you do get the ball and there is a noticeable difference.

“The pitch was an issue last year but this gives us no excuse.”

Last night saw Wilson return to the side having not started the first league game against Brentford on Saturday.

He said: “The cups are another game and it gave players like myself, Michael Morrison and Joe Gomez the chance to show the gaffer what we can do.

“I think it is a great cup, a good game and a great opportunity to put your stamp on next Saturday.

“There is nothing more you can do than give everything in the game and hope that you’re playing in the league the following week.”

Youngster Gomez started behind Wilson at right-back and the two-goal man was impressed with what he saw form the 17-year-old.

Wilson explained: “By the looks of Joe in training, and seeing him in these games, you can see that he is going to be a big, big talent.

“Playing in these games are going to progress him. He can play centre-half and right-back and he looks like he’s going to be a great player.

“He needs to keep is head.

“There are a lot of factors that come into it.

“I think back to when I was 17 and the sorts of things that I was up to.

“He is leaps above that so he needs to keep level headed, keep playing, keep training with us and hopefully become a lot better than he already is.”
