Head coach Bob Peeters was left to rue a number of missed opportunities as Charlton began their Championships season with a 1-1 draw at Brentford.

George Tucudean missed a one-on-one and Igor Vetokele hit the post before the latter nodded the Addicks in front at Griffin Park.

Callum Harriott then struck the crossbar 10 minutes from time with home keeper David Button outside of his goal - and it proved costly as Tommy Smith equalised five minutes from time.

Peeters was left frustrated to have only picked up a point, although he was very pleased with his side’s creativity.

He said: “It is more important that we created chances and if you go away and create four 100 percent chances then you should take more than one.

“First half with Tucudean, the header from Vetokele and the crossbar from Harriott were all good opportunities.

“You don’t normally get four big chances away from home and that is something that we need to work on a little bit.

“But everyone put their all into it (the game) and I can’t blame one player for their performance today.

“I will never blame someone when they miss a chance.

“We will keep on working today and trying to get better each week.”

Charlton saw Reza Ghoochannejhad depart to Kuwait last week and the Addicks boss is still looking to boost his attacking options.

“If a striker like Reza goes then maybe you need to get someone else in,” said Peeters.

“We’ll only go for quality players, we don’t just want to get someone to have a bigger squad.

“It is important that if a player comes in they can help and strengthen our team.

“If we have a chance to sign a player in the window then we will do it.”

Vetokele, one of Charlton’s summer overseas signings, was the standout performer for the Addicks and Peeters was pleased with his new recruit.

“It was interesting to see how the new players would cope with the physical way of playing and the pressure from the crowd,” he said.

“I think we did well – especially Vetokele and Gudmundsson. I was very happy with all of the performances from my players.”
