Addicks head coach Bob Peeters admits he is about to discover just how good his newly assembled squad are in Saturday’s opening league fixture at Brentford.

The new Valley supremo has been a busy man in the transfer market since landing the role as Jose Riga’s replacement, signing up eight new players with more seemingly on the way.

Charlton signed off their pre-season campaign last Saturday with a 2-1 success at Portsmouth, although Peeters is the first to accept that counts for absolutely nothing at the newly promoted Bees at a packed out Griffin Park.

The boss was asked how his side would cope with an inevitable Brentford onslaught in what will be their first home game at this level since 1993.

“That’s what I don’t know,” admitted Peeters.

“I think through pre-season we tried a lot.

“And OK, you always try a little bit for a result, we were not really bothered (with results), it was just the boys need to get to know each other.

“But now we will see how ready the team is.

“Again it is a long season and I don’t want my players to be nervous.

“Everybody is going to be a little bit nervous – the fans and players – because it is the first game.

“Some players came in from abroad so they don’t know yet what to expect because in friendlies it is not 100 percent.

“From Saturday from kick-off it will be an eye-opener for some players.

“Hopefully they can cope with it but for us it will be interesting to see how the players can deal with it.”

Peeters also admitted he didn’t know exactly how long it would take all of the new signings to settle in with the early fixtures coming thick and fast for his side.

He said: “It can be very quick, it all depends on the way we cope with pressure and with everything.

“We will see how we deal with it on Saturday and then we have three games already in the first week, so I think that will make something already clear for us.

“Brentford are a good side and their first game is at home so they will be ready for it.

That’s what I told my players as well – it is a good side and we need to be on the top of our toes or they will beat us.”
