A STUNNING 77th minute strike from Ricardo Fuller set Charlton on their way to a 2-0 Valley win against Peterborough.

The game appeared to be heading for a scoreless stalemate until Fuller fired home an unstoppable shot from 25 yards, picking up an injury in the process.

And Yann Kermorgant popped up with a decisive second five minutes from time to ensure Charlton go into Saturday’s derby at Millwall having picked up 13 points from the last 15 available.

There were two changes for the Addicks from Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Huddersfield.

Dropped to the bench were Rob Hulse, who scored against the Terriers, and Dale Stephens with Kermorgant and Dan Seaborne coming into the starting XI.

Kermorgant almost made an instant impact, trying his luck with a 20-yard volley as early as the second minute which Posh keeper Bobby Olejnik had to push behind for a corner.

Emmanuel Frimpong saw an effort deflected behind for the first of two Charlton corners in quick succession, with Fuller heading over from the second one.

Almost immediately Peterborough went on the attack and only a crucial touch off Leon Cort took Dwight Gayle’s shot behind at the expense of a corner.

Chris Solly went on a run which took him into the box before seeing his shot blocked, while Johnnie Jackson should have done better when he headed over from six yards despite being unmarked.

Ben Hamer was called into action as the Addicks keeper got down low to deal with Michael Bostwick’s attempt from outside of the area.

Bradley Pritchard was the next to try his luck in what was proving to be an end-to-end contest, this time Joe Newell providing the block to deny him.

Michael Morrison was cautioned for a foul on Lee Tomlin, his fifth yellow card of the campaign which means he will now miss Saturday’s derby at Millwall.

Fuller ran into the box 10 minutes before half-time and produced a decent save from Olejnik, while at the other end Gayle headed just over from Newell’s delivery.

Hamer caught George Thorne’s attempted 25 yard lob on his line, while the Addicks keeper had to be alert again on the stroke of half-time to tip over George Boyd’s effort after the visitors broke impressively.

Grant McCann summed up a poor first half by blazing a volley 40 yards over the bar in stoppage time.

Kermogant went close with a header from Solly’s cross three minutes after the restart and the defender turned provider again moments later, whipping in a dangerous delivery which Pritchard met and headed against the post.

Tomlin’s stinging low drive was well saved by Hamer as Peterborough demonstrated again they remained a serious threat on the counter, a point underlined again as Thorne headed just wide from a corner.

Gayle placed a shot straight at Hamer after being picked out by Thorne’s pass and the visitors hit the post when Boyd’s shot from outside the box was touched onto the woodwork by Tomlin, although he didn’t appear to know too much about it.

Kermorgant placed a 35-yard free-kick harmlessly over, Boyd blasted a shot over after bursting into the box and then Tomlin had a penalty claim ignored after going to ground too easily.

Chris Powell made his first change with quarter of an hour remaining as Frimpong made way for Danny Green.

Charlton finally got their noses in front two minutes later in spectacular style as Fuller unleashed an unstoppable 25 yard shot past Olejnik and into the top corner.

Fuller actually injured himself in the process and was immediately replaced by Hulse.

But there was to be no anxious finish for the hosts as they added a decisive second with five minutes to play.

Green’s cross took a slight touch off Hulse and Kermorgant was ideally placed to fire past Olejnik from six yards.
