Kieran Daly admitted it was an honour to compete at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games after the Blackheath & Bromley Harriers sprinter helped the public remember London 2012 on Horse Guards Parade.

Daly was getting a taste of what he missed out on two years ago as a specially-built stadium was erected on Horse Guards Parade to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

And in the 100m B race the 21-year-old more than held his own, coming home third in 10.36s and finishing ahead of world indoor 60m champion Richard Kilty.

Victory went to Harry Aikines-Aryeetey while 2012 European 200m champion Churandy Martina was second and Daly admitted his outing on Horse Guards Parade has left him wanting more.

“I thought my race was OK but I am just pleased to be racing in such a competition,” said Daly, who hopes to compete throughout the Summer Series – events proudly backed by long-term supporter Sainsbury’s.

“Between 20m to 40m I was a bit flat but I am carrying a little injury.

“I am just coming back so it was great to be in such a competition.

“The niggle is in my hamstring so I didn’t want to push it to hard and end up tearing it so all things considered I think it was a good run for me.

“Being in such a competition is a big step up for me and something very different to anything I have done before.

“Before the year I hadn’t even won a national title and now I have and now I have competed at the Anniversary Games so it was an honour to be involved.”

The 100m B race was marred by the fact that Kilty thought the race was going to be called back for a false start, only for the officials to deem that there had been no wrongdoing.

It left Kilty with a lot of work to do as he stalled out of the blocks but Blackheath & Bromley sprinter Daly insisted he wasn’t going to let anything stand in his way of challenging the field.

“I heard the gun,” he added.

“It was very faint but I heard it so I just went for it.

“These things happen sometimes and as soon as I went I was gone and wasn’t going to stop or slow down for anything.”

Sainsbury’s is proud to support British Athletics through the Summer Series events and is committed to helping young people lead healthier, more active lifestyles.
