Lewisham’s Conrad Williams insists it is all systems go for the Commonwealth Games after declaring his outing at the Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix as mission accomplished.

Williams was treated to a sneak peak of what is around the corner over the weekend as he took to Hampden Park, the athletics venue for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

But much more than that, the 32-year-old was going in search of the 400m European Championship qualifying standard which sat at just 0.09 seconds faster than his season’s best.

And while Williams could only finish sixth he still did enough to earn himself a plane ticket to Zurich, crossing the line in 45.46s, 0.24s inside the required time for next month’s Europeans.

Williams doesn’t have time to sit back and relax now though as he immediately turns his attentions to Glasgow 2014, something he cannot wait for after his outing at Hampden Park.

“The Glasgow Grand Prix was wicked and I enjoyed it,” said Williams, who hopes to compete throughout the Summer Series, events proudly backed by long-term supporter Sainsbury’s.

“It was a good crowd and I loved the track, so I can’t really complain with anything, I am really happy because I also got the time I needed.

“I got a bit carried away because I knew I needed to get the standard for the Europeans. I went out hard but it is a nice track so I wanted to use the conditions to make sure I qualified which I did.

“But now I have to make sure I go and prepare for the Commonwealths, I have less than two weeks to get myself right and be ready,

“Four years ago I made the final of the 400m and finished sixth so this time I want to go back in the relay and get gold. We got bronze four years ago but I think we can win it.

“We are always representing GB so it will be good to be with England and race against the guys we normally team up with.”

Joining the Kent AC sprinter in Glasgow was Blackheath sprinter Kieran Daly.

However, he endured a tough time of things as he was disqualified from the 100m B race after a false start.

He then returned to the track 24 hours later in a Great Britain B side for the 4x100m, but again disaster struck as the quartet failed to get the baton around.

Sainsbury’s is proud to support British Athletics through the Summer Series events and is committed to helping young people lead healthier, more active lifestyles.
