Blackheath win battle of the heaths at Hampstead

BLACKHEATH women’s rugby team went straight to the top of the SE Two table after a 32-0 win at Hampstead on Sunday.

Despite unavoidable last minute changes in the front row, Blackheath more than held their own at the set piece and debutat hooker Katie Jewell was able to take several balls against the head. Scrum half Claire Elliott worked with the back row to put pressure on the Hampstead half backs, preventing them from getting quick ball away and neutralising their mobile backline.

Blackheath back of the match Rebecca Carlton collected 10 points in the first half by scoring a penalty, converting tries by Amy Wigley and Frankie Newby and notching up the first drop goal of her career to put Club 20-0 up at the break.

The visitors continued to dominate possession after half-time and Newby and Wigley each collected a second try. Carlton converted Wigley’s score to put Blackheath 32 points ahead.

The women have a weekend off the league this Sunday but will take on Ferrera Ladies RFC (the Italian Fire Service) in a friendly at Rectory Field, kick-off 3pm.
