ADDICKS boss Chris Powell was impressed by the way his players bounced back in today’s 2-1 win at Ipswich after three consecutive Championship defeats.

Charlton picked up their second win of the campaign at Portman Road thanks to early goals in the second half from Johnnie Jackson and Ricardo Fuller.

Jason Scotland’s deflected 57th minute finish ensured the visitors faced a tricky finish to the game but they held on to record what was arguably a deserved success against fellow strugglers Ipswich after both sides began the afternoon in the relegation zone, something Powell’s side are now out of.

He said: “It has been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game I’m sure Paul Jewell looked at it as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I.

“I’m very pleased we are the ones who have come out on top but I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it.

“It was a sterling performance by all of my players and they showed a real good side of their character because it has been hard mentally losing three games.

“We always felt we were close in the three games but you can’t keep saying you are close, you have to win games, you have to get points and sadly we hadn’t done that.

“But we had a good discussion this week, we’ve trained well. The last half an hour at Derby showed what we can do in this league.

“I asked them to produce a bit more than 30 minutes and I felt they done that today, so I’m really pleased for them and everyone connected with our club.”

Powell predicted the first goal would be crucial and so it proved with the added bonus of Fuller quickly adding to Jackson’s 48th minute opener.

“It is all important,” the Valley chief said.

“I know people will say that doesn’t always work out but it gives you a foothold in the game, the other team then have to change their tactics and we hit them with a double whammy.

“The first goal was really well taken by Johnnie Jackson, who is now up and running, and then Ricardo Fuller showed his class with his individual effort and really put us in a strong position.

“A deflected goal against and we are really disappointed with that.

“We really would like to get a clean sheet but it was important for us and everyone’s mentality really that we can take the lead in games and hold on to it.”

Powell added: “The players were really focussed on today.

“We obviously watched Ipswich on Wednesday night (against Wolves) and felt there would be a response from them, but I felt we weathered the storm and really settled into the game.

“We had a few changes – Johnnie Jackson went into centre midfield, Salim Kerkar came in and Ricardo started after being an impact sub for a few weeks. I felt the players who came in and all of the players had a real focus and determination about themselves and gave us a performance today.

“I’m really pleased we’ve ran out the winners.”
