Why did I waste a night watching Millwall v Cardiff?

Darius Henderson goes close with a header - but not close enough. ALAN STANFORD. Darius Henderson goes close with a header - but not close enough. ALAN STANFORD.

MILLWALL columnist MATT LITTLE took nothing positive from last night’s defeat to Cardiff and says he can’t really blame the stay away fans after the Lions again failed to get a five-figure crowd for the second consecutive home game.

LAST night felt like a complete waste of time and totally pointless.

Shovelled down dinner in double quick time.

People pushing and shoving to get on the train to South Bermondsey from London Bridge.

Crammed in like cattle.

Popped into the club shop, full of overpriced tat.

Walked past a massive and unmoving queue for the ‘tickets collection’ booth.

Bought a programme for £3 – it lists our achievement for winning the second tier, and therefore promotion to the top flight, on the same level as our 2000/01 third tier championship title for some reason.

Walked past an empty SE16 beer tent area, which was closed long before kick-off.

Sat in a seat and gave a lukewarm reception to the players, most of whom were a part of the side that got thrashed up at Hull City.

Looked around, stadium under half full.

Cardiff City ran out in their new colours of red and with a red dragon on their badge, the Bluebirds airbrushed from history.

Listened to a few hundred Welshmen sing that annoying Palace Ultras ditty ‘we follow’.

Some were wearing red replica tops.

A Cardiff goal was ruled out, the free-kick went straight in but was not given due to a pull in the ‘build-up’.

We shaded the first half by passing it around in front of the Cardiff players nicely.

Half-time was spent queuing to get into a smoke filled toilet.

Cardiff started the second half brightly and scored two well struck goals without much resistance.

We made a quick change and brought on Chris Taylor and Chris Wood.

The game ended.

Waited at South Bermondsey station alongside surly police officers.

A surge to get on the train, no-one wanted to have to wait while they sorted the away fans out.

Crammed in like cattle again.

Found out Charlton had lost again, but we were only just above them, so no room to crow about it.

Got home and had a cup of tea.

I took nothing interesting or joyful from the entire evening, I learnt nothing I didn’t already know.

That is to say that using South Bermondsey station is a crappy experience, the match day experience often leaves you cold, we can’t rely on fancy dan passing football against the likes of Cardiff and the Millwall faithful certainly will not turn up in numbers to watch it.

Oh, and that Charlton won a very poor League One.

Most of us can put up with all the dross leading up to getting inside the stadium as long as there is something worth supporting.

We didn’t play badly but it was just powder-puff, there was no rallying point or Millwall roar, just the sound of seats emptying as players argued over what they should do about taking a corner.

The club wonder why more of the Wembley crowd don’t turn up regularly.

Well, I think it would be pointless telling them.

I suppose this blog is pretty pointless too, but why should I put in the effort when the players put in such a mediocre shift?

Captain positivity as ever.
I appreciate you are a journalist but do you really know that much about football?
We played a very good first half which we edged and on another day with some luck could have gone in 2 up. We're playing a well established championship side which have recently sold their soul to a Malaysian devil, and spent over £12M on new personnel, despite having a wealth of good options already in their team. We, on the other hand have a very small budget, not at all helped by the fact no fans turn up and put money in the clubs pockets. There were several positives to take from the game, and while you might like to focus on the negatives there ARE positives. Some Millwall fans have a delightfully short memory. I was at Yeovil away a few seasons ago when we lost and had Dunney sent off. Losing 2-0 at home to a "Prem" side?
Could be worse.

I'm going to have to get the Editor to include the statement on every blog that I am NOT a journalist.

It's an opinion piece.

And in my opinion you cannot read.

I said we shaded the first half. Did i not?

I have always been sure to highlight the fact we are up against it in this division.

I am sure we will be fine & finish lower midtable & have said that in other blogs.

However, it was my opinion that the game v Cardiff was powderpuff - and that Millwall fans don't like to see that.

Considering this blog is once again at the top of the most read list & yours is the only comment then I assume many others agree. That's certainly reflected on the Millwall websites.

And perhaps the dull football served at home over the last 18 months has led to people not turning up. We're not a big club, but if we were playing exciting, attacking football at home then you'd expect 12-13,000 for that kind of midweek game v a top Championship club. Not a massive crowd by Championship standards - but for us a significant increase on 9,000.

To repeat, we will be alright - the likes of Peterborough and Charlton/Palace (going by Sky) look woeful...and we're more together than the likes of Ipswich, Watford and Derby...but it doesn't mean people are happy to put up with the dross getting into the ground & then the tepid stuff served up on it.

I'd imagine our best games will be away from home once again.

I think you are a problem. As a "blogger" you are a representative of this club to the media and a wider audience of people who read NS. Your "opinions" are often ill informed and pedantic. You resort to name calling in most of your blogs towards Palace and Charlton, with your "spotty teenager" "train spotter" and "Nigel" jokes. I don't mind this as all Millwall fans will take the mick out of them as well. I just feel as a person who's views reach more than just his mates in the boozer on Saturday, or other posters on Millwall themed forum websites, you could do a **** site better representing us. I believe in turn if we give off a better perception to the general public of our football club, more younger people will be interested in following Millwall as opposed to those just looking for the tear up they believe a day following Millwall, is. Your Sheffield article was laughable as I was there and saw everything first hand. Millwall fans are very quick to have a problem with the image cast over us by the media, then on Saturday they're the first to throw a bottle or kick a tram window through. While your actions are not malicious or violent, you don't help the perception of our football club either, all be it in a different way. You, as much as any other fan have a responsibility to represent us in a good light, and sometimes I feel you could do better.. Excuse my grammar, I'm not a journalist either..

I've never called palace nigels or charlton fans train spotters.

Find all of that a bit sad. But then again most football fans are quite sad by their nature.

I have referred to the Palace Ultras as spotty teenagers - if you've seen them up close I can't see how you can deny that? 90% of them are just that.

As for Sheffield - my point was the idiots on twitter etc had it reported as fact that we had KILLED a police horse and attacked a disabled fans and smashed up shop windows - all things denied by the SOUTH YORKSHIRE POLICE.

I was suggesting that perhaps people should look into the actual facts. I know we have a sizeable hooligan problem & mentioned the smashed tram door - but it's a big jump from that to killing horses and attacking people in wheel chairs.

I don't know any Millwall fans that have a problem with our image. Most i know own no-one likes us t-shirts, car stickers etc and sing it loud and proud.

And I have no resposibility to represent us in any light - I just happen to be a Millwall fan who writes his opinion.

Get in contact with the paper if you want to do this blog instead.

Or we can both send ours in and the editor can choose which to publish.

Ok, I will take up your offer. Can I enquire. Is the Editor in any way football inclined, does he/she have a particular allegiance?

He's a good bloke, and has supported this blog well.

I'm sorry you feel it should represent us better - it's always had good feedback from Millwall fans, and has covered many topics, including our history and things like the regen - but you are welcome to improve it.

I enjoy doing it, but the Cardiff game (following on from Hull & imo 18 months of poor home displays) was the final straw.

People that read this blog expecting a match report or a happy clappy view on life at The Den will be disappointed.

I leave match reports to the professionals - they do it much better than me, and I think the NewsShopper do some of the best Millwall ones (I'm not paid to say that). Bloggers doing match reports I think is a bit arrogant.

As for happy clappy stuff - yeah, I want my blog to make people think It doesnt bother me if that offends some. Jamie Redknapp is a likeable bloke, but I doubt he has ever sparked a decent debate in his life. I believe for the most part my views reflect the majority of ordinary match day Millwall fans. And have always got that kind of feedback.
