Saunders wins Faldo golf contest for second time
2:05pm Thursday 9th August 2012 in Sport
DARTFORD golf sensation Michael Saunders has enjoyed even more success on the course after adding the Sir Nick Faldo Commemoration Jug to his ever growing trophy haul.
The event, which was marking its quarter century after being launched in 1987, is by invitation only to club champions from around the country and it was the Dartford Golf Club member who returned home with the prestigious crown.
With the strongest and largest field ever in this event, Saunders was in third place after the morning round with a one under par 69.
But he showed his class and consistency with a 69 in the afternoon to win by one shot from Paul Lockwood (South Beds GC), with Rob Watson (The Shire GC) in third.
It is the second time Saunders has collected the trophy having also triuphed in 2010.
Saunders is hoping his good form will continue.
He shot a 67 in the English amateur at the beginning of last week, the lowest score of the tournament out of the 288 players.
This week he plays in the international European amateur championship in Dublin, where he is a playing member of the England squad.
