Thamesmead Town 0-6 Welling United
12:04am Wednesday 8th August 2012 in Sport By Mark Doig
LOUI Fazakerley and Harry Baker scored a brace apiece as Welling United completed a comprehensive victory over neighbours Thamesmead Town.
Baker was busy early on, first playing in Luis Cumbers, who shot just wide, and then cutting in to force an excellent save from Rob Budd before again cutting in only to see his shot deflected wide after a clever run by Cumbers off the ball had opened up some space.
After a Jamie Day corner had been headed over by Anthony Acheampong, Thamesmead showed that they could cause problems and Jamie Turner had to be alert to clear a Ross Lover through ball.
Welling broke the deadlock when Fazakerley found space at the edge of the penalty area, and finished in style.
Jon Main had a couple of opportunities, first seeing an effort blocked by James Donovan and then having a long shot saved comfortably by Budd before Welling doubled their lead.
Cumbers broke down the right hand side and rounded Donovan before pulling the ball back for the unfortunate Lewis Tozer to slide into the back of his own net.
Turner had to be out sharply again to foil Richard Butler who had combined well with Rikki Cable but Welling went forward again and Fazakerley struck the goal of the game with a stunning shot from 25 yards.
Mead thought they had pulled a goal back just before half time when Lover’s shot looked destined for the far corner but Turner, at full length, got a fingertip onto the shot and deflected it onto the post and out.
At half time Welling made seven changes, and Thamesmead two.
Enoch Adjei saw his header saved by Turner however Welling scored again when Ross Lafayette slotted home after Theo Fairweather-Johnson saw his effort saved and Baker scored his first soon after.
An Ashley Probets deflected free kick was saved by Turner before Baker scored again following good work by Lafayette.
Chuck Duru broke through for Thamesmead but shot just wide before Malachi Hudson headed a Lafayette cross over the bar.
Another Probets free kick flew over as Thamesmead’s last chance failed to trouble Turner.
