ROSE Howell emerged victorious in the ladies singles final at the annual Farnborough Tennis Club tournament.

Her opponent Alice McVeigh stormed into a two game lead, but Howell quickly battled back into contention.

The set settled down and progressed evenly from 3-3 to 6-6, with Howell eventually winning the tie break.

It was equally close in the second set, which produced a number of long rallies and few breaks of serve, resulting in another tie break which McVeigh won to draw level.

The deciding set was a match tie-break and it was Howell who finally emerged victorious 10-6 to claim the crown.

Brian Keegan used his drop and lob tactic to great effect in the men’s singles, defeating Simon McVeigh 6-2, 6-2.

Keegan teamed up with Peter Sargent in the men’s doubles to recover a one set deficit and see off Simon McVeigh and Nigel Gerlack 4-6 6-4 6-2.

Alice McVeigh was back in action in the ladies’ doubles final to partner Kuniko Sato against Helen Morris and Sue Newberry.

Morris and Newberry settled into the match more quickly than their opponents and were soon one set up.

Newberry’s powerful ground strokes were working well and Morris was very effective at the net.

The second set was a much closer affair as McVeigh and Sato came back strongly but they were just edged out 7-5.

McVeigh made her third final appearance in the mixed doubles, partnering Nigel Holmes to a 6-3, 7-5 success over Newberry and Sargent.
