KENT county champion Michael Saunders displayed nerves of steel to win the Lagonda Trophy this week at the Gog Magog Golf Club in Cambridge.

The Dartford GC star was one shot behind the leader standing on the last tee, but with impressive previous rounds of 69, 67 and 69 he was determined not to let this one slip.

In front of very a large crowd and English Golf Union representatives, Saunders birdied the last hole, while the leader bogeyed to give the Dartford man two shot swing and victory with a round of 70 five under par for the tournament.

The EGU order of merit and world amateur ranking points event attracted a high class field, including several England players.

Saunders adds his name to a winner’s list which includes world number one Luke Donald (1997) and world number three Lee Westwood (1992).
