BLACKHEATH Hockey Club celebrating its 150th anniversary on Saturday with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of a team of parliamentarians on the heath.

The game, which was played under 1861 rules, was a highly robust, good humoured and entertaining encounter for the crowd and players alike.

Both teams were dressed in Victorian style costumes, many of the men sporting moustaches and the ladies playing in ankle length skirts.

Ultimately it was the Parliamentary team who mastered the rules of the 15-a-side game where the sticks shared more in common with a walking stick than a modern hockey stick.

The scorers were Mr Philip Alexander and Mr Stephen Hammond MP.

Saturday’s game was the highlight of an event which featured the England Hockey Road Show that allowed youngsters to try their skills at the modern game and to build awareness of the hockey to be played at the Olympics.
