Wings coach proud of squad

Barry Ashby reflects with the Welling squad after the final whistle Barry Ashby reflects with the Welling squad after the final whistle

WELLING assistant manager Barry Ashby believes the club’s players can hold their heads high after Sunday’s heartbreaking 1-0 play-off final defeat at Dartford.

The Wings were looking to end a 12-year wait to return to the Conference but were undone by Lee Noble’s stunning fourth minute strike.

Ashby acknowledged Noble’s effort had been a bit special but added Welling should be rightly proud of what they have achieved this season.

He said: “It was a very tight game and we had a 25 minute spell in the first half after the goal went in where we created a half chance or two.

“To be fair they had the decent strike of the match and in tight games it can often end up making the difference, which it did on Sunday.

“We had a bit of disappointment last year when the points deduction meant we missed out on the play-offs, but the team and squad have had a great season.

“A lot of teams in our division have spent a lot more money on their budget than us, so it is a massive achievement by the club to finish third in the table.

“We are gutted we weren’t able to finish the job against Dartford but we all know we can hold our heads high.”
