CHARLTON manager Chris Powell says he is no closer to resolving Darel Russell’s future after failing to get hold of Preston counterpart Graham Westley after last weekend’s 2-2 draw.

Powell had been hoping to raise the issue of making Russell’s loan switch from Deepdale to The Valley permanent in the summer but was instead forced to conduct discussions via text message as Westley couldn’t be tracked down after the final whistle.

“It would have been nice to have seen Graham after the game, he was off doing press but I went into his room and never managed to speak to him,” the Addicks chief explained.

“We’ve sent texts and everyone knows he likes texting. We exchanged texts over the weekend.

“I will see Darel and his representative within the next week.”

Powell also denied a report this week linking him with a summer swoop for Wycombe striker Stuart Beavon.

“It is news to me,” he added.

“I’m sure silly season will get even sillier.

“People will link us with loads of players now, that is agents and clubs at work.

“I know how the game goes but if I’m interested in a player I will contact his club first.

“He is a good player, we saw him score recently against us and he did very well for Wycombe but Wycombe will want him to stay and spearhead their promotion bid from League Two next year.

“All I can say on that is it is news to me.”
